Turks Heads
In the metal forming industry, a turks head is very versatile and useful piece of machinery. Whether it is used on its own or in conjunction with a larger line of metal forming equipment, a turks head machine permits forming directly from round to square, rectangles, and special shapes. When compared to other forming methods, a turks head has the ability to take a larger reduction per pass and maintain uniform tolerances.
How They Work
A turks head machine operates on the same principle of a rolling mill and imparts the same qualities to metal such as superior surface finish, accurate size and shape, an improved grain structure of the metal. Turks heads do differ from rolling mills in the number of and arrangement of rolls. A turks head utilizes two pairs of rolls, one pair is arranged horizontally, while the other set is arranged vertically. Material is formed and shaped through the turks head machine by either a pulling device of by driven rolls.
Types
Pull-Through Turks Heads require an external pulling device, such as a capstan. Other pulling devices can include a drawbench, bull block, double capstan, a shedding drum or a rolling mill. One of the advantages of a pull-through turks head is that the tension applied to the material by the pulling device minimizes camber during the process. Pull-through turks heads are capable of running speeds up to 1,500 FPM and allow for easy roll adjustment.
Power-Driven Turks Heads eliminate the need for a pulling device, such as a capstan. By eliminating the capstan less floor space is required for the machine and material waste is reduced – saving precious metal and scrap. With this configuration the top and bottom rolls allow for direct roll drive of the material, this is best for maintaining constant tension on delicate, low-tensile product. Turks Head Mills are used to create a profile for large wire, rod, bar, or strip. Standard models include top and bottom roll drive. Dependent upon the application, they can be designed as standalone units or incorporated as part of a much bigger line. When required, gauging and closed loop feedback systems can be incorporated. For example, a turks head machine may be used in conjunction with a rolling mill as part of a line designed to flatten and shape material.

Universal Models: Also known as a “u-type” turks head machine, includes 2 axes of adjustment: the first axis moves up & down, and the second moves in & out. Any square or rectangle shape within the capacity of the turks head can be set up by adjusting the position of the rolls. A universal model turks head is easiest for the set-up of standard width and thickness.
Plain Models: Also known as a “p-type” turks head machine, includes 4 axes of adjustment so each roll moves independently. Because each roll is set up directly in line with one another, plain model turks heads are the best choice for customers whose application requires the production of specialty shapes.
Combination Models: This model includes 6 axes of adjustments. A combination turks head machine be used as either a U-type or P-type turks head. This configuration provides the most flexibility in setting up the rolls.
Uses
Turks heads are used across a range of industries to form various types of metal.
